About This Guide

This guide supports people with reading disabilities. It will assist the ease of reading of online material by setting dyslexic fonts in selected databases and use of different devices to adapt best practices.

eResources for Dyslexic and Visually Impaired

Reading eBooks makes easier and convenient through Overdrive. It supports dyslexic users to suit to their reading and learning style to enjoy reading. To access it, simply click the link below. 

Step 1. Log in with your Overdrive account. Select an eBook available in the Overdrive Read format. 

To limit your options to only eBooks available for browser-based reading, go to 'Advanced Search' and under 'All Formats', select 'Overdrive Read'.

 

 

Step 2. Select a title to borrow, with the Overdrive Read format available at the right corner.

 

Step 3. Click the 'Settings' to change the format into dyslexic font and other options.

 

Step 4. Select 'On' to activate dyslexic font into your chosen eBook.

Step 5. Your selected book display will be changed to dyslexic font and is ready to read.

 

To learn more about navigation tips, consult the 'Menu' options in the upper left of the open eBook screen. 

Bookshare database helps people with dyslexia, blindness, cerebral palsy to remove reading barriers to experience reading virtually any book they need for school, work, or the joy of reading. You may access it using the link below and refer to the steps for your reference.

Step 2. Go to www.bookshare.org and log in to your account.  After logging in, download the Argreement Form to complete the registration. Once completed, you may start to navigate the Bookshare database.

Dyslexic font on Libby App

Standard typefaces are often difficult to read for people with dyslexia as the letters are hard to differentiate and words tend to jumble together. Libby App features a dyslexic font option, making determining letters much easier so readers can focus on finding and enjoying their reading experience.

Please follow these steps on how to maximize Libby app using a better font and display for a more convenient reading. 

Step 1. Install the Libby app from your device's app store. Or, visit www.libbyapp.com in your Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge (Chromium) browser

Step 2. In Libby, follow the prompts to find your library and sign in with your QNL username/PIN

Step 3. Browse your library's collection and borrow a title

Step 4. Borrowed titles appear on your Shelf () and download to the app automatically when you're connected to Wi-Fi, so you can read them when you're offline.

On your Shelf, tap loans (at the top of the screen). From there, you can:

  • Tap Read With... to choose where you'd like to read the book or you may start reading the book.
  • Tap Open in Libby to start reading or listening in the app.
  • Tap Manage Loan to see options like Renew and Return

Adjusting Fonts, Contrast, Text Size, and Brightness

  • Tap the center or button of the screen to bring up the Navigation Bar.
  • Tap the Aa (Reader Settings) button (second from the right of the top bar menu).
  • Adjust the font type
    • Tap one of three available settings: Serif, Sans Serif, Open Dyslexic
    • Tap the screen outside the control to close the control.
  • ​Adjust the contrast
    • Tap on one of the three available combinations: 
    • White text on Black background, 
    • Black text on Sepia background, 
    • Black text on White background.
    • Tap the screen outside the control to close the control.
  • To adjust text size
    • ​Tap the large A to make the text bigger or the smaller A to make the font smaller.
    • Tap the screen outside the control to close the control.
  • To adjust brightness
    •  Drag the slide control to adjust brightness to your preferred setting.
    • Tap the screen outside the control to close the control

Reading Setting on Libby Apps

Once you tap the OpenDyslexic, your screen will be changed into Dyslexic fonts
